Ikea subway apartments

Here's an ambient ad from Paris for Ikea:

Tiny apartments were built in a Paris metro station with actual volunteers sleeping, eating, and living in these Ikea-furnished spaces as commuters watched.

  1. Oh? Really? Cool! Why do they did this? I mean, for what? Is this some sort of advertisement or something like just for informative purposes? Was this apartment for sale, for rent or just for free to everyone who wanted to stay there? It looks as though a penthouse apartment at the center of a substation.
